Dante Summer Festival 2009:  PROGRAMME

OPENING CONCERT

Dante Quartet
with Dante Festival Orchestra, conducted by Tim Boulton

Saint-Saens (arr. Osostowicz) – Fantasia on a Breton Folk Song, for strings              
Ravel – Quartet in F
Haydn – Quartet op 20 no 2 in C
Andrew Wilson – Concerto on Breton themes

The Dante Festival Orchestra features the best young string players from 14 local schools, generously organised by Callington Community College.  Andrew Wilson's new Concerto brings together the Quartet and Orchestra, while Ravel's string quartet, one of the most popular quartets ever written, uses just four instruments to create otherworldly sounds and expressions.

Dante Quartet explores musical conversation - or furious argument - in Beethoven's Great Fugue, which has outraged and fascinated audiences since 1825.   Demonstration and open discussion followed by concert performance. Late coffee and cake

Family workshop: create pictures inspired by the live music. Art materials provided.  All ages welcome.  (Book in advance to avoid disappointment, as space is limited.)

See how eight musicians work together preparing for Sunday's concert in Tavistock.  Sparks may fly.  Free admission.

FESTIVAL WALK with Jo and James Rider through the hills and valleys of their beautiful organic farm. Walk in association with Amnesty International.
(Bring a picnic at 1.00 pm if the weather is fine).

STORIES AND STRINGS
Dante Quartet
with Mike O'Connor OBE celebrated storyteller.
Workshop recommended for children aged 9-14, adults welcome too. Take part in creating a story inspired by the magical sounds of Debussy's string quartet. Advance booking required.

Haydn - Quartet op 33 no 2 in Eb, "The Joke" 
Brahms - Sextet no 1 in Bb
Andrew Wilson - Breton Song Biniou
Mendelssohn - Octet for four violins, two violas and two cellos

Enjoy Haydn's subtle wit and the glorious mellow sounds of Brahms' sextet. Mendelssohn's amazing octet, written when he was only sixteen, ends the festival with a brilliant flourish of virtuosity and musical invention.
